You have to think of what to say and how to say it at the same time. That’s when your mind goes blank.
Repeat after me
Easy, but you only copy someone else’s sentence. You never build one yourself.
Retelling
The story gives you what to say. You work only on how to say it, in your own words. That’s the skill a real conversation needs.Stuck? Switch your notes to fuller hints or to your own language. You always have something to hold on to.

How to practice English speaking in 3 steps

What is retell practice?

You hear a short real-life moment, then say it back in your own words from brief notes, the way an interpreter works. You build every sentence yourself, on the spot, which is exactly what a real conversation asks of you. It is spoken English practice with AI feedback, and you need no partner, no live chat and no script to read.

  1. Hear a real moment

Something you could face this week, in an American or British voice. Replay any sentence, slow it down, or tap a word to see it in your language.

  2. Say it in your own words

Retell it from short notes, with no timer. Stuck? Make the notes fuller, or switch them to your own language.

  3. Fix it and say it again

You see what you missed, what to correct and the phrases a native speaker would use, each explained in your language. Then you say it again with your fixes on the notes, and play both takes side by side.

Feedback on what you meant to say

Because there’s an original, the AI knows what you were trying to say. It quotes your words, crosses out what didn’t work and shows how a native speaker would say it, with the reason in your language. The score counts the points you covered and the mistakes you made, so talking around the story can’t score well.

Example

Take 161/100

After work I was very, very tired, so I did not go to the gym and I go home.

Take 285/100

After work I was completely worn out, so I skipped the gym and went straight home.

Who this English speaking practice is for

  • Your mind goes blank when you speak

Free talk makes you invent what to say and how to say it at once. Here the story gives you the what, so all your effort goes into saying it.

    Retell practice
  • You’ve tried speaking apps and still can’t speak

Repeating lines and tapping answers teach you to copy, not to say your own thoughts. Retelling makes you build every sentence yourself, then shows what you missed.

    Intermediate English speaking practice
  • You get by, but only in simple, stiff sentences

Because there’s an original, the feedback shows how a native speaker would say exactly what you meant, not just a random better sentence.

    Advanced English speaking practice
  • Talking to a tutor or an AI makes you freeze

No stranger waiting, no topic to come up with, no timer. Practice on your own until it comes out smoothly.

    English conversation practice
  • Your IELTS Part 2 answer runs dry

Part 2 is speaking from brief notes. Retell model answers, see which points you dropped, and learn to keep going for the full time.

  • You don’t know where to start

Begin with short everyday stories and notes in your own language. Make the notes thinner as you get better.

Questions about English speaking practice

How is this different from ChatGPT voice, Speak or another AI English speaking partner?

ChatGPT voice and apps like Speak give you a partner to talk to. That helps once you can already speak, but it leaves the hardest part to you: thinking up what to say while working out how to say it, which is exactly when your mind goes blank. Here you practice English speaking with AI that has the original story in hand. The story gives you what to say, so all your effort goes into saying it in English, and because the AI has the original, it knows what you meant: it shows the native way to say your own sentence, points out what you left out, and scores you out of 100. Then you say it again and compare both takes side by side, so you see the progress in minutes instead of chatting for weeks and guessing.

Will the AI mark me down for my accent?

No. The Clear sounds score only counts words a listener would struggle to understand, and there is no “percent native” score. You can keep your accent and still get full marks. If the AI misheard you, open “What we heard”, read your take as text and record it again.

Is this good for IELTS speaking practice?

Yes. Part 2 asks you to speak for up to two minutes from brief notes, which is very close to retelling. Pro includes Part 2 practice on people, places, events and objects: retell a model answer, see which points you dropped, then try again.

Is this English speaking practice really free?

Yes, it is free English speaking practice to start. The story at the top of this page works without an account or card, with 4 corrected tries a day, which is two full rounds. A free account gives you 10 tries a day and starter stories from 3 scenarios.

What level of English do I need?

Any level from about A2 up. This English speaking practice with AI lets you set the difficulty yourself: every story comes with notes at three levels, Detailed, Keywords, or My language (notes in your own language). Pick the one you need and switch anytime. Each sentence has the original text and a translation, and new words come with explanations, so you are never stuck on a word you don’t know.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. This is English speaking practice online: it runs in your browser on a phone or a computer, so there is no app to install. You only need a microphone: allow it when your browser asks.

What happens to my recordings?

Your recording is sent to our speech recognition and AI providers only to create your feedback. We don’t keep it, and we never use it to train AI. Your scores and saved phrases stay in your account. Nothing goes public unless you choose to share it.

How much does Pro cost, and can I cancel?

Pro costs $79 a year or $29 every 3 months, both with every scenario. We email you 3 days before each renewal, and you can cancel anytime in your account and keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
